Greece is strategically located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan peninsula, Greece shares land borders with Albania to the northwest, the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria to the north and Turkey to the northeast. Griechenland liegt am östlichen Mittelmeer in Südeuropa und setzt sich geographisch aus dem griechischen Festland am südlichen Ende des Balkans, der Halbinsel Peloponnes, die jedoch durch den Bau des Kanals von Korinth vom Festland getrennt wurde, sowie zahlreichen Inseln zusammen, die hauptsächlich in der Ägäis, im Ionischen aber auch im Libyschen Meer liegen. Die politische Grenze nach Norden bilden die Staaten Albanien, Mazedonienund Bulgarien sowie im Osten die Türkei. Eine natürliche Grenze bildet das Ionische Meer im Westen des Landes mit der italienischen Halbinsel und Sizilien sowie das Libysche Meer im äußersten Süden mit dem afrikanischen Kontinent. Die Insel Gavdos im Libyschen Meer ist der südlichste Punkt des Landes und gilt zudem geographisch als südlichster Punkt Europas.
